The Greatness of Jesus Psalm 110
One of my favorite Psalms to preach and the Psalm that is quoted most often in the New Testament is Psalm 110. It is a Psalm that is Messianic in its entirety, which means that it is all about the coming Messiah. From our perspective (post-New Testament era people) we know that the Messiah is Jesus. This Psalmist explains four roles of Jesus and we must believe them all if we are to call ourselves ‘Christians.’
Verse one says, “The LORD says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’” Jesus uses this verse to prove to His enemies that He is God. Even though the Messiah is considered ‘the son of David,’ David calls Him ‘Lord.’ Why? Because He is God and David believes that to be true.
In verse two, we see that the Messiah also holds His mighty scepter which symbolizes His role as King. He will return in the last days as the conquering King of all creation.
Verse four tells us that the Messiah is a priest after the order of Melchizedek. His priesthood will replace the Aaron priesthood with much better results. He, as Priest, can actually be the mediator who, by His very sacrifice, will take away sins.
Finally, verses five through seven show us that the Messiah will return as the one true Judge who will judge the nations and shatter His enemies. If you have not believed that Jesus is, in fact, all of these - God, King, High Priest, and Judge - I urge you to repent and believe. If we have believed this, we can look forward with great JOY to His return when He will fulfill these various roles.
