Connect 4

God made us for community — to belong and to care for each other.  Even though we talk about community a lot in church — going to small groups, attending events, volunteering — many can still feel isolated even when they are part of our community.

Real connection takes effort. I want to share four simple ways I have witness true connection take place with people in our church and community:

1. Show Up

Community isn’t just something you join; it’s something you live. Connection happens in everyday moments — sending a quick text, grabbing coffee, or just asking someone how they’re really doing. Jesus didn’t just plan events; He spent time with people. The early church shared life, not just schedules. [Side note: You can’t move beyond awkward or superficial connections until you consistently show up and engage time and time again.]

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” — Acts 2:42

·         Where can you show up this week to work on building true connection?

2. Be Real

Church can sometimes feel like a place to look perfect. But connection can’t grow when we’re pretending. Being honest about our struggles not only frees us, it helps others feel less alone.

“Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” — James 5:16

·         Where can you be a little more real this week — with a friend, a small group, or God?

3. Reach Out on Purpose

Community doesn’t just happen — it takes intention. Sending a message of encouragement or checking in after a long silence makes a difference. Don’t wait for someone else to start.

“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” — Hebrews 10:24

·         Who could you reach out to this week just to let them know you care?

4. Look Beyond Yourself and Your Inner Circle

Real connection doesn’t stay inside the church walls. It moves outward — toward neighbors, coworkers, or anyone who could use encouragement. Serving others in practical ways shows them what Jesus looks like.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16

·         What’s one simple way you can love someone outside your usual circle this week?

Community isn’t optional in faith — it’s part of how we live it out. We weren’t meant to follow Jesus alone. As our church prepares for our next chapter – we can jumpstart our vision by simply showing up for each other, one small connection at a time.
