Give Thanks
First Thessalonians 5:18 is a verse that reminds us to give thanks to God not only on Thanksgiving Day in November, but to give thanks at all times and, yes, “in all circumstances for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for [us].”
At first glance, this seems unreasonable.
“God can’t expect me to give thanks for poor health, poverty, or loss of loved ones (and on and on)!”
But, He can and does because it helps us to realize that, no matter how difficult our circumstances are, God is in control: He loves us, He provides us with the Holy Spirit - our Comforter, He wants what’s best for us. This is part of His refining process that transforms us bit by bit into the likeness of Jesus. To give thanks helps us to fight off depression and self-pity and to remember that we have been so blessed in Jesus Christ. Through Him we are forgiven and have an eternal inheritance kept in Heaven for us. That is why Paul could say, “For this light momentary affliction* is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison . . .” (2 Corinthians 4:17) When we are faced with difficulties, we are reminded to stop and give thanks for all that we have in Christ. Aren’t we thankful that He came as a baby and stayed the course for the purpose for which He came?
* For examples of Paul’s ‘light momentary trials’ go to 2 Cor. 11:23-29. WOW!
